Annabeth Chase is a female Demigod and the potential love interest of Percy Jackson. She is the daughter of Athena, and has inherited some of her wisdom, although she still has the standard condition of ADHD and dyslexia, the latter of which gives her difficulty in spelling sometimes.[1] Annabeth, in the book has blonde, curly hair unlike in the movie. In the last book, she and Percy get together; the trailers for the upcoming movie seem to indicate that their romance will develop much more quickly.

Her life ambition is to become an architect, and she is fascinated by famous structures. Annabeth has a troubled history with her father, whom she ran away from when she was seven after he remarried. Annabeth patched things up with her father at the end of The Sea of Monsters, and went to live with him in San Francisco after The Titan's Curse. She has a streak of gray in her hair as a souvenir of her holding up the sky in The Titan's Curse. Her fatal flaw is hubris, or extreme pride, as made known in The Sea of Monsters.

Annabeth will be played by Alexandra Daddario in the upcoming movie.

[edit] In the books

Annabeth is one of Percy's best friends throughout the books. They go on many quests together. Though they relentlessly argue, they actually like each other.

[edit] In The Lightning Thief

Annabeth first appears in The Lightning Thief and is twelve years old. She initially was nicknamed "Wise Girl".

She first meets Percy Jackson after he was attacked by the Minotaur and makes his way into half-blood hill. While he is recovering from his battle wounds, she feeds him ambrosia and nectar in the Big House. The first words she speaks to him are, "You drool when you sleep," though this was once he was conscious, having earlier asked him about the Summer solstice when feeding him ambrosia. Afterward, she is very hostile until she hears that he is to go on quest and wants to go along, thinking Percy is "the one" from Chiron's prophecy. Together, Annabeth, Percy, and Grover go searching for Zeus's lightning bolt. Throughout the book, Annabeth shows her unique intelligence, which she inherited from her mother, and also her arachnophobia that she shares with all her siblings on her mother's side (originating from the story of Arachne and Athena). At the end of the book, Annabeth is deeply hurt by Luke's betrayal.

[edit] In The Sea of Monsters

Annabeth returns once again to help Percy save the camp, though this time they are friends, as opposed to the tension because of their parents in The Lightning Thief. Together they journey to the Sea of Monsters to find the Golden Fleece (needed to save Thalia's pine tree and Camp Half Blood's magical borders) and save Grover from Polyphemus, a huge cyclops. She hears the Sirens' song after convincing Percy to tie her to the mast and confirms that her fatal flaw is hubris, as it is the most common flaw of children of Athena.  She wants to rebuild Manhattan. She also learns to accept Tyson, Percy's half-brother, who is a young Cyclops, after having a bad experience with one long ago. When they return back to camp, she and Percy team up and win the chariot race. Her feelings for Percy just barely emerge at the end of the book, when she kisses Percy on the cheek after winning the chariot race.

[edit] In The Titan's Curse

Annabeth was kidnapped along with the goddess Artemis by Dr. Thorn and had to be saved by Percy, Thalia, Grover, Bianca di Angelo and the huntress Zoë Nightshade. It is hinted in this book that there will be a romantic future for her and Percy. Aphrodite, Goddess of Love and Beauty, also convinced Percy about his love with Annabeth, though she also made it exceptionally harder for them to fall in love. In the end, Percy saves Annabeth and then they start to show their feelings for each other.

[edit] In The Battle of the Labyrinth

Annabeth is now fifteen years old, and she and Percy find an entrance into the Labyrinth. She realizes that Luke may try to use this entrance to invade the camp and she is starting to realize her feelings for Percy when her and Percy were supposed to go to the movies, alone, together. But is jealous when she finds out that Percy was accused of setting fire to his future school, (again)  Goode High School, because Rachael Elizabeth Dare is with him.  When he gets back from Ogygia , she knows that he is hiding something about where he was.

Annabeth leads the quest into the Labyrinth, fulfilling one of her ambitions at last. Annabeth descends into the Labyrinth with Percy, Grover, and Tyson to find a way to stop Kronos's evil forces from entering the borders of Camp Half-Blood by searching for its inventor, Daedalus. The prophecy the Oracle gave her appears to have scared her and she refuses to say the last line. As they go into the Labyrinth, they face many wonders. Annabeth faces a Sphinx and finds the riddles (which are actually factual questions) not challenging and an insult to her intellect. They escape the claws of the Sphinx and continue on to find Hephaestus so he can tell them about where to find Daedalus.

Annabeth believes that Percy dies when Mount St. Helens erupts but right before he goes in she kisses him, but this is not the case. Percy has instead been marooned on the island of Ogygia. Percy takes a human Rachel Elizabeth Dare to help them on their way through the labyrinth, and the three of them discover Luke, who has become Kronos's vessel. After a battle, Luke is forced back into the Labyrinth, leaving two casualties. Annabeth is last seen in Battle of the Labyrinth, leaving Percy on the hill, not looking back.

[edit] In The Last Olympian

Annabeth joins forces with the Campers and goes to New York City to save Manhattan from Kronos' army.  At one point, she takes a poisoned knife for Percy, that Ethan was using to try to stab Percy.  Percy gets Blackjack to fly her away, and takes Kronos on, and has to retreat.

She saves Percy and Olympus by finally realizing for whom the prophecy is truly meant for: Luke. She convinces Percy to give Luke her knife (that was given to her by Luke when she was seven) so he can stab himself, which would banish Kronos to Tartarus.

Annabeth is rewarded by the gods, now being able to fulfill her dreams and design the gods a new city on Olympus, as the old one was ruined by the battle ,she is also allowed to design the new cabins. At the end of the book, she and Percy officially become a couple.

[edit] Powers/Abilities

  • Like other half-bloods, Annabeth has ADHD, which is supposed to make half-bloods more aware in battles, and like most other half-bloods she has dyslexia, due to the fact that she is 'hard-wired' from birth to read Ancient Greek and because of her instincts of fighting and being a daughter of Athena.
  • Annabeth is very knowledgeable in architecture, history and Greek myths, which is very useful in her journey and battles.
  • Annabeth is also a master strategist.
  • Annabeth is trained in hand-to-hand combat during her stays at Camp Half-Blood.
  • Annabeth is extremely intelligent, wise, and clever.
  • Due to the fact that she is a daughter of Athena, Annabeth is good at arts and crafts.
  • Annabeth is very skilled at using her knife, as Percy noted in The Last Olympian - "Somehow Annabeth caught the strike on her dagger hilt. It was a move only the quickest and most skilled knife fighter could have managed."

[edit] Romance

Throughout the books Annabeth and Percy have shown many signs that they like/love each other but neither one would admit it until the last book. In The Last Olympian, Percy refuses to become a god so he can be with Annabeth. They had four kisses, one in "The Sea of Monsters" after Percy and Annabeth won the chariot race, though that was only on the cheek, one in Hephaestus' forge at Mt. St. Helens, one in Camp Half-Blood's dining pavilion, and one underwater kiss in the canoe lake, after Clarisse and all the other campers dumped the couple into the lake. They started officially dating each other in this book.

It also hinted that she might have had a romantic interest in Luke through the books. This is dispelled, however, at the end of The Last Olympian when Luke asks her if she ever loved him. Annabeth replies that there was a time where she thought she had, but no, she only saw him as a brother. She then looks up at Percy and they smile at each other.

[edit] Weaknesses

[edit] Fatal Flaw

  • Hubris, or deadly pride. Annabeth believes that she's able to do anything: get her parents back together, build great monuments, and save Luke as shown in The Sea of Monsters. She sometimes even thinks she could recreate the world, even better than how the gods did it.

[edit] Fear

Like all other Half-blood children of Athena, Annabeth has a immense fear of spiders, freezing up just when she sees one or anything that bears a close resemblance to them. This fear is because of Athena's bad history with Arachne the Goddess of spiders and Arachne's hatred of Athena. A long time ago, the goddess Arachne challenged Athena to see who could make the best tapestry. Athena accepted the challenge, and the two both made a tapestry. Athena's was of the gods punishing mortals for being to full of pride. Arachne's showed the gods in insulting ways. Athena destroyed the tapestry and turned Arachne into a spider out of rage (supposedly after Arachne tried to kill herself). Ironically Arachne could still probably use the web from her spinnerets to make silk. Ever since then Athena's children have been paranoid that every spider they see is out to get them.

Alexandra Daddario as Annabeth Chase.

[edit] Weapons/Magical Items

  • A magical Yankees cap that turns her invisible.
  • A celestial-bronze knife that she uses as a weapon. This knife was given to Annabeth by Luke. It was cursed when Luke betrayed Annabeth.
  • A laptop with ideas and information from Daedalus.
  • Used a video shield during The Last Olympian, made by Charles Beckendorf.
  • A necklace with beads from every year at Camp Half-Blood. It also has her father's college ring on it.

[edit] Film

Annabeth is played by Alexandra Daddario in the upcoming movie.

In the upcoming film The Lightning Thief, Annabeth will be played by Alexandra Daddario. During the newest trailer there are scenes where Annabeth is holding weapons such as double swords, hand crossbows, and she appears brunette in the film version.
